Another Gift

No Comments 22 March 2010

Scripture
“Give me another gift.” Joshua 15:13

Observation
A daughter got land for her wedding present and asked her dad for water too. What’s that in the Bible for?

I think the story is there to get us to ask. Most of us think that God gives carefully. Because he is a tinge reluctant we should be grateful for what we get and not risk bothering him for more.

But Caleb’s daughter is a gutsy violation of the etiquette of giving. She received yet asked for more.

But this is more than a selfish brat. This is a daughter with a dad who loves her.

Application
Am I any different? No. I’m a son with a father who loves me. All I need is to ask. Her request was wrapped in wisdom. Land needs water to grow. Water was a logical need. God has given to me gifts. Yesterday, being installed at Evergreen Community Church as senior pastor by Pastor Brady Boyd was a remarkable gift. Yet even after Solomon had been crowned he went home and asked for more. I must too. I want to go beyond the well-intentioned prayers of others into the depth of what the Father wants for me and us.

From today’s song: “Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he defend thee.”

Prayer
Father, give me wisdom what to ask for. Amen.

I'm Phil McCallum, a husband, father and most of all one of the people Jesus loves. I'm privileged to serve Evergreen Community Church in Bothell, Washington as Senior Pastor where people love enough to believe "it's all about relationships." In 1982 I made a vow to read God's word daily and apply it to life. Each day I write out my reflections. Some days I post those on my blog. It's a little personal but it's my hope it will stir you to go deeper still. Learn how I do my devotions. These are my thoughts and not necessarily those of the ministry I serve. By the way check out the computer study Bible Glo. I highly recommend it.
