Scripture
I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone. Numbers 11:17

Observation
God’s works are built on well-chosen friendships. In today’s readings is the record of Moses and Jesus launching their inner circles. Moses chose Joshua, a young man, Jethro, his father-in-law, Aaron, his brother, Hur, and the 70 elders of Israel. Quite a mixture of young and old. Jesus selected as his hub three hard working men off of a fishing trawler, Peter, James and John.

These men were chosen first because they were already leading when Moses and Jesus chose them. They were busy men, yet teachable, full of wisdom who could give a sense of direction. Those relationships became so significant, that to quote Moses, he would not move out until two trumpets blasted. One trumpet was the signal that Moses had a idea. Two blasts was a sign that all the leaders had the idea. This circle of friends became significant leaders who could take the weight of ministry.

Here was the secret: God took what was on the leader and put it on the friends around the leader. What moved from one to the other was not the leader’s woo of charisma, it was the Holy Spirit himself. There is something about the personal work that the Holy Spirit is doing in the life of a leader that is transferrable to those who serve close alongside of him.

Application
We are the result of the books that we read and the friends that we keep. We need to chose well

Prayer
Father, lead me well as I lead others.

I'm Phil McCallum, a husband, father and most of all one of the people Jesus loves. I'm privileged to serve Evergreen Community Church in Bothell, Washington as Senior Pastor where people love enough to believe "it's all about relationships." In 1982 I made a vow to read God's word daily and apply it to life. Each day I write out my reflections. Some days I post those on my blog. It's a little personal but it's my hope it will stir you to go deeper still. Learn how I do my devotions. These are my thoughts and not necessarily those of the ministry I serve. By the way check out the computer study Bible Glo. I highly recommend it.
