Peter Ate Bacon

0 Comments 03 February 2010

Normally I have a worship song, but today I felt like a bit of laughter in my devotions. I saw Jim Gaffigan life in Honolulu giving this sketch on bacon. It made me think of Peter at Cornelius’ house. I wonder if they had ham for lunch afterward? Enjoy.

Scripture
“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” Acts 10:14

Observation
It was like asking a conservative Baptist to go square dancing. Peter had never tasted bacon, lobster or pizza in his life. Now he was free to order from the whole menu.

Peter didn’t like what God served up to him. It offended his sensibilities. There were deep rooted dos and don’ts in his life. He didn’t bend easily.

What was God up to? Reading the book of Acts, it is clear that Jesus was working a plan with his church to soften Jews to receive Gentiles. Had Peter been stopped and asked in Acts 2 what part Gentiles played in God’s plan, I don’t think he would have had an answer. It was all for Jews. Even the ones “far off” were Jews.

God had more in mind than Peter did. Here are the signs.
Acts 4: Peter defied the Jewish rulers.
Acts 8: Philip leads an Ethiopian converted to Judaism to Christ.
Acts 9: Paul is called to preach to Gentiles.
Acts 10: Peter eats bacon.

God had a plan and it was only Peter who could have pulled of a total reversal in Jewish thinking.

Application
There are times that God will offend my sensibilities because of greater purposes that he has to do. When I’m digging in my toes, perhaps my stubbornness is a sign of God’s direction.

Prayer
Father, help me to be attentive when you birth new things. I don’t want to get in your way. Amen.

I'm Phil McCallum, a husband, father and most of all one of the people Jesus loves. I'm privileged to serve Evergreen Community Church in Bothell, Washington as Senior Pastor where people love enough to believe "it's all about relationships." In 1982 I made a vow to read God's word daily and apply it to life. Each day I write out my reflections. Some days I post those on my blog. It's a little personal but it's my hope it will stir you to go deeper still. Learn how I do my devotions. These are my thoughts and not necessarily those of the ministry I serve. By the way check out the computer study Bible Glo. I highly recommend it.
