Faithfulness

Making the Most of Little Things

Scripture
I will not drive them out before you in a single year, that the land may not become desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. “I will drive them out before you little by little, until you become fruitful and take possession of the land. Exodus 23:29-30

Observation
I spoke with a pastor yesterday just fresh into a new ministry. In his former church he had been a respected voice. When he spoke, people listened. But now in a new church he experienced indifference. He was surprised because he thought that the credibility of his last ministry would transfer to his new position. He told me that it is a struggle for him to start all over again. Like John Maxwell says, when we leave one role and move into another we always start again at the bottom.

It is uncomfortable to be an old hack in a new place. The problem is not really a desire to be heard, but something more important. It’s the desire to be useful. The early days in a new place are unproductive. Just think about your first day on a new job versus a later day in the same job. The longer the serve the more we are able to do.

We need to become comfortable with the process. God does not open all at once, but little by little. Ultimately fruitfulness will come and all the territory that God has allocated for us will be available to us. But in the meantime there are little things.

Application
I need to not only make the most of the steady process but also make the most of little things. There is a temptation to brush little things aside. Instead they need to be fully embraced.

Prayer
Father, thank you for promises of things to come, but what I have to live is today. I will make the most of every little thing you give me today. Amen.

Promises

Why God Gives Promises

Press the arrow to listen to Mercy Me sing “Word of God Speak” as you read today’s devotion about God’s promises.

Scripture

The Lord’s promises are pure,
like silver refined in a furnace,
purified seven times over.
Psalm 12:6

Observation
What would need to be purified out of one of God’s promises? That’s the question I have when I read Psalm 12. Why would a promise of God need to be purified seven times over? What impurity would be in something God has spoken?

I think the impurity could very well be us. God gives to us the promise but we are apt to misunderstand it and misapply it. So the promise begins its work of purifying us over and over again until our live aligns with the promise of God.

What are our impurities?

  • Assumptions. We jump to conclusions of how a promise is going to work out instead of holding it lightly so God can interpret it for us.
  • Motives. We often want, what God wants for the wrong reasons. So we must be put through hardship to reveal to us what is wrong in our motives.
  • Simplistic. We can see the promise in the distance like mountain ranges. What is far away looks deceptively near. We forget that on the way to the peak there are deep valleys.
  • Misdirected. We think that God’s love for us means that he dislikes those we dislike. So we perceive our promise as either favoritism or as ammunition against others. His plan for us could very well be designed to help those who have harmed us.

I’m sure there are more, but the bottom line is that God gives us promises not just to answer our prayers but to change us. This was Joseph’s story. He was given a dream at the age of 17 not just to paint a bright future, but to change Joseph in the process.

He sent a man before them,
Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
They afflicted his feet with fetters,
He himself was laid in irons;
Until the time that his word came to pass,
The word of the LORD tested him.
Psalm 105:17-19

The very desires God has given to us are part of the process of making us who he wants us to be.

Application
There is much that God wants to change in my life, therefore he gives me promises. I will be refined seven times, but I will come out pure silver with a life that aligns with the words I have been given. So I choose to submit to the process.

Prayer
Father, I accept that the promises you give are as much about changing me as they are about changing my circumstances. So I ask this day Lord that you would use the promises you have given to me to change me. Amen.

Just Stand

Press the arrow to listen to Hillsong Church sing “I Will Run to You” as you read today’s devotion about God’s deliverance.

Scripture
The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. Exodus 14:14

Observation
“Quick, do nothing!” That was God’s command to his people as they bit their fingernails down to the quick. The dust clouds of enemy chariots were on the horizon. The sea glistened in front of them. It was one day that they wished that they were not at the beach.

“Don’t just do something, stand there!” That was God’s instruction to his people. Their hearts were beating, their palms were sweaty and their mouths were dry. If they would stay steady longer than seemed reasonable, they would be surprised.

Application
The other day Pastor Brady Boyd at New Life Church asked us to reflect on the most harrowing days of our lives. He then asked us a follow up question: what has happened since then to resolve that problem? We were all able to think of many examples of God’s deliverance. We need eyes to see through our problems to the hope of the other side. Instead of looking at Pharaoh and his armies behind us we should imagine the victory dance on the far shore. The source of this hope is meditation on God’s persistent faithfulness over all of our life journey. He has delivered us and he will yet deliver us.

Prayer
Father, help me to live looking backward at your goodness so that I can walk forward into your abundance. Amen.

Last Day or Best Day?

Press the arrow to listen to Jared Anderson sing “Hiding Place” as you read today’s devotion about deliverance.

Scripture
From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you. Exodus 12:20

Observation
There some days so black on our calendar that we imagine there will be no other days to follow them. We think it will be a horrible day and that after it life will end for us and quite possibly the human race.

But God dares us to another point of view. Instead of imaging our toughest day as the last day, he stirs us to consider that it may just be our new beginning. For the Jews the day we call Passover was awaited with the dread of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The angel of death was going to fly over their home. Would blood do the trick? Would would the king do this time? And who could think to eat a roast dinner at a time like this!

Yet the darkest day of Israel’s history became New Years Day for them. “From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you.”

Application
We need to give the Historian who makes history the right to define our story. Instead of imagining the bleak day as our last day, we should let God reinterpret it for us as the first of the best days of our life.

Prayer
Father, help me to see my life more and more from your point of view. Amen.

God Rewards the Curious

Scripture
So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush… Exodus 3:3-4

Observation
God is moved by curiosity. He speaks to those who shuffle out of their rut to explore something new. But too often we keep to predictable paths with our eyes trained on our feet. There is something about Moses’ example that stirs us to look around for unusual sites and to examine them. A God who is incessantly creative calls for followers who are insatiably curious. May I be one of those.

Prayer
Father, when the bush burns, let me not run for a fire-extiguisher, but let me take off my shoes to warm my toes before the miracle appearances of God. Amen.

God's Presence

The Everywhere God for Anywhere People

Press the arrow to listen to Mercy Me sing “God With Us” as you read today’s devotion about the presence of God.

Scripture

“I have been a foreigner in a foreign land.” Exodus 2:22

Observation

Moses had a rootless life. He started by floating in a river. Then he lived as an adopted child in a strange home. He was exiled as a fugitive in the desert. He led the people for 40 years through wilderness. In the end he did not touch the Holy Land.

Yet for all the drifting Moses experienced, we see him as a foundational figure. I perceive Moses somewhere between the Charlton Heston-esque silhouette and the marble statue of Moses carved by Michelangelo.

What has made Moses so resolute in our memory, though he was a fugitive and nomad? Moses knew how to find God in strange places. That was his secret. At the edge of an ocean with an army behind him, in desert wastes or at bitter waters, Moses had the capacity to find the Lord anywhere.

Application
There is no comfort in being a foreigner in a foreign land. Everything is strange. Though one may live in a culture for decades, there are always unspoken rules of society never known until broken. There are no memory-drenched places where we once met with God and where he might show up again. New places have a hollow, lonely echo. But after the burning bush, everything changed for Moses. He was able from that point on to find God anywhere. So too must eye. Life has many scrolling panoramas that cannot be rewound. In the unfamiliar I must find the familiar one.

Prayer
Father, like Moses, help me to find you everywhere I am because you are anywhere I can be. Amen.

Scripture
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.’
Luke 20:42-43

For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:6

Observation
Two million people are expected to attend today’s inauguration today. The other 300 million will look from a far distance. But at the actual moment only three people will matter.  The new President, the new first lady and the Chief Justice. No one else will be closer to the centre of things. From today forward, many will swim up stream to fight for a few moments time in the Oval Office. Most of us will never get there.

But I am guaranteed a seat of honour next to Jesus. There is something so inclusive about Christ’s love that there is a chair next to him available for everyone who believes.

The throne we sit beside is not one fought for on a campaign trail. There is no contention connected to it. Instead, it is a chair of peace. Jesus simply sat on it and waited for his Father to take care of things.

There is a peace sitting close to Jesus. Just as his position was granted without striving, so too our security will come not because of haranguing but by trust.

Application
I wouldn’t have a clue of how to get five minutes with President Obama, but I can spend this entire day with Christ. Sitting beside him stills all of my desires. He didn’t strain to exalt himself there, so neither should I. Jesus got all that he has by letting go. I surrender to him.

Prayer
Father, today bless the President coming into authority. Grant him wisdom to lead well. Be the unseen presence who stands beside him in every hour. And let me live with an awareness of where I am and whose I am. Amen.

I'm Phil McCallum, a husband, father and most of all one of the people Jesus loves. I'm privileged to serve Evergreen Community Church in Bothell, Washington as Senior Pastor where people love enough to believe "it's all about relationships." In 1982 I made a vow to read God's word daily and apply it to life. Each day I write out my reflections. Some days I post those on my blog. It's a little personal but it's my hope it will stir you to go deeper still. Learn how I do my devotions. These are my thoughts and not necessarily those of the ministry I serve. By the way check out the computer study Bible Glo. I highly recommend it.
