One Prayer Fits All

Press the arrow to listen to “When I Call On Jesus” while you read today’s devotion on desperate prayers.

Scripture
“‘Lord help!”‘ they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.” Psalm 107:6

Observation
There is one prayer that brings an answer. It is like a master key that will open any door. It is not complex. It is not eloquent. It need not be memorized, because every human being on the planet knows this prayer by heart.

There are just two words that bring an answer: Lord help! Those two words can punch through the noise of a storm and be heard in heaven. For some reason, this prayer works best when we have run out of words to say. In fact, we can’t pray it convincingly until it seems that all hope is gone.

When we have run out of words, just two will do: Lord help!

Application
To pray this prayer, I need to do more than to speak words. I must gather up all of my frayed nerves and push this petition out of my lungs with all of my emotion. God will rescue me when I am convincingly serious.

Prayer
Father, today I ask for help. Let it be more than just talk but deep action from my heart. Amen.

Anointing, Holy Spirit

Lord Pick Me!

Press the arrow to listen Need to Breathe sing “Yaweh” while reading today’s devotion on the anointing of the Holy Spirit

Scripture
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me….Isaiah 61:1

Observation

Here are some thoughts about the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

1. The anointing is on the person and not on the role that he or she fills. A business card does not give anointing nor does the lack of one make any difference. An anointed person will make a difference wherever he is placed.

2. The anointing comes first before anything else will happen. Organization, education, networking nor technology do not create the anointing. They can enhance it and convey it, but the touch of God on a human life is first before anything else happens.

3. The anointing is more than personal, he is a Person. The Holy Spirit of Adonai Yahweh body wraps himself around our spirit and works through us.

4. The decision of whom to anoint is not made by a leader, a committee or a popularity contest but by the Lord God himself. Sovereign means God does the choosing; we must do the waiting.

5. The anointing comes from the God whose name is not a noun but a verb. All human names are nouns because a person is limited; God’s name is a verb because he is a Lord of action. When the anointing comes on me things will change.

6. The anointing is expressed through spoken words more than anything else. These are words that announce, comfort, bind up and more. Our words matter.

Application
I need the anointing of Adonai Yaweh on my life.

Prayer
Father, today I stand in need of your anointing touch on my life. The work I do and the place I serve do not give me anointing; in fact they drain that. Instead, you are the anointed one and you pour your anointing on my life. You alone do the selecting; it is not of me. Oh Lord, pick me! Amen.

Rest/Sabbath

Enjoy Life! That’s An Order!

Press the arrow to listen to Mercy Me sing “You Reign” while reading today’s devotion on rest.

Scripture
Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath
and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.
Isaiah 58:13

Observation

God commands us to enjoy a day off. That’s an odd thought. Why would we need to be told to do what we want to do?

For the same reason that a mother must tell her child to go to bed.

For the same reason that we bristle when someone suggests that we take a break.

For the same reason that we can’t relax until we feel that we have “deserved” a vacation.

The reason is that we have trouble letting go of work because somehow we think it is up to us. As the saying goes, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” We just don’t know how to switch that off. Our problem is that we forget, that though we are make like God, we are not God. Rest reminds us that the Lord is God and we are not. For that reason we resist rest. For that reason God commands us to rest.

Application
Rest is not a suggestion to me; it is God’s command. I’m listening. But it is not enjoy just to take the rest; I must enjoy it and speak of it with delight. I take a regular day off, but I don’t enjoy it nearly as much as I ought to.

Prayer
Father, help me to do the enjoyable things that you command. Help me to rest. Amen.

God's Love, God's Presence

Live Like You Are Loved

Press the arrow to listen to Third Day as they tell the story behind their song “Call My Name” just before performing the song.

Scripture
I have cared for you since you were born.
Yes, I carried you before you were born.
I will be your God throughout your lifetime—
until your hair is white with age.
I made you, and I will care for you.
I will carry you along and save you.
Isaiah 46:3-4

Observation
Back in 1986 in Sindelfingen, Germany a Mercedes-Benz was born. A factory worker adjusted the hood ornament, and a white gloved driver maneuvered a 300E onto a waiting transport ship bound for the USA. Twenty-two years have passed. The old Merc has a few nicks and scrapes. The antenna doesn’t work. The odometer got stuck at 139K. But the two-decade-old classic is mine, bought and paid for. In the glove box there is a number for Mercedes roadside service. I was stuck somewhere in eastern Colorado and gave them a ring. Not only did they solve my problem, but they chatted about the history of my car and sent me a birthday card for its anniversary. Somehow as I drive my old classic I feel that white-coated Mercedes technicians are in the backseat with me.

God gives to us more than a lifetime guarantee. He who has been with us in the womb, walked with us to school, and was there when we lost our job, is the same God who will walk with us when we shuffle behind our walker and close our eyes to see him at last. There is a secure feeling of being packed in bubble wrap at the thought of his consistent and persistent attentiveness to our condition. God is there and that is more than enough.

Application
The Father does more than care for me, he will carry me. He will do more than just send kind thoughts. He will become personally involved. I’m watching this at the moment as my parents have moved into a retirement community. They threw their hearts into the kingdom in their 63 years of marriage, always putting Jesus first. Never have they lacked for a home, even now. In fact, just a week after we moved them from their home into the unit, their house sold. God is faithful to bring us through until the end.

Prayer
Today, Father, help me to walk like one who is loved. Amen.

Leadership

Leading into the New

Press the arrow to listen to “I’m Letting Go” by Francesca Battistelli as you read today’s devotion about leading in new ways.

Scripture
With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands,
and encourage those who have weak knees.
Say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, and do not fear,
for your God is coming to destroy your enemies.
He is coming to save you.”
Isaiah 35:3-4

Observation
God can make a new road, but it is possible that no on will walk on it. New ways bring fresh fears to those who are used to old paths.

God makes new roads and it takes leaders to fill them with pedestrians. In Isaiah 35 there is a remarkable prophecy of a new way that God was preparing to open in the desert. Jesus fulfilled the prophecy and made the new way. It was John the Baptist who encouraged the first travelers to walk on it.

God is constantly making new ways but he needs leaders to lead pedestrians on them. The trail blazing has already been done by the Lord. It is up to leaders to infuse confidence into others to use them. This takes a special skill of mixing leadership with encouragement.

It takes more than leadership to bring change. In fact, leadership can be too courageous and cause followers to freeze in fear.  Leadership is not always waving the flag at the front of the parade, but slipping behind others, inspiring them along the way.

Application
God has called me to strengthen and encourage with words that are like rebar to reinforce the soul. Hands are tired and knees are weak because the work and way has been hard. The message of hope is that road conditions have changed. Old hazards have been removed. It is safe to travel.

Prayer
Father, help me to counsel as I lead. And most of all, give me the words that make a lingering difference in the lives of others. Amen.

Church, Expectation

Where to Start

No Comments 16 July 2008

Press the arrow to listen to Mercy Me sing “You Reign” while reading today’s devotion about living with imperfections.

Scripture
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone,
A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed.
He who believes in it will not be disturbed. Isaiah 26:16

Observation
There are many disturbing things in the city of God. The church is not a perfect place because people are in it. The local church is an odd blend of high ideals and broken lives. We are right to have high expectations because God has given us a grand vision and the power to accomplish it. But we are nothing more than clay models made from the dust of the ground and so we don’t live up to expectations.

When we are disturbed about problems in Zion, it is tempting to take matters into our own hands. In some broken down part of the city we begin to throw up a speedy wall to shore up the city. But our haste and lack of planning is visible by how out of place our human efforts look in the overall city plan.

Application
Instead, we are to build on the cornerstone. When a mason lays a new wall he first puts in a starting block. Every block and course emanates from that first brick. A new section cannot be thrown up on its own. Instead it must start with the cornerstone. Jesus is building is church and what looks right and lasts is built on him. In panic or good intentions, we are not to throw up temporary solutions. Instead, we are to find where Jesus is building and align everything we do with that.

Prayer
Father, today, show me where Jesus is building his church and let all I add on be right on the string line of his purposes. Amen.

Endurance

Race Pace

No Comments 15 July 2008

Press the arrow to listen to Chris Tomlin’s worship song “Jesus Messiah” while reading today’s devotion on endurance.

Scripture
…Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us….Hebrews 12:1

Observation
My wife bragged to me the other day that she has entered the domain of the hypermilage drivers by scoring 48 miles per gallon in her Honda Civic. We went on a long drive together and she carefully tapped the numbers into her calculator. I scored a humiliating 34 miles per gallon. Why? Because I drove with impatience while she drove with endurance. I wanted to get there cool and fast. She is quite content to roll down the windows and drive in the slow lane. Leslie is an endurance rider and I am not.

The race of life we are to run, but only with endurance. There is a sense that we are to meter our days with the end in mind. Instead of gazing only at the goal, we are to drive like a rally driver who takes all of the winding, dusty road into account. What matters is first to complete the race not to compete the race.

When I was 25 and just out of the staring blocks, I ran my first six months of full-time pastoral ministry as if Jesus were coming by nightfall and I were Billy Graham. I got to the end of that season fatigued. I ran with only the end mind and not the middle bit.

It was in about year 13 of full-time ministry, and I was plain pooped and thought I needed a vacation immediately. A wizened old saint taught me that rest does not always come by stopping, but in how we slow for the curves along the way. Rest is not always found in the word “stop” but also in the word “slow”.  There are micro-vacations along the way that meter our energy at sustainable levels.

Application
Now at year 22 of full-time pastoral ministry I need to keep the word “endurance” in mind. There is a pace for my race that may not get me there first and fast but right to last.

Prayer
Father, I ask that the word “endurance” will become one of my life words. I can see that faith is all about pushing through hardships not just to get to heaven but to bring heaven down to earth. Let my deliberate steps make a difference. Amen.

I'm privileged to serve Evergreen Community Church in Bothell, Washington as Senior Pastor where people love enough to believe "it's all about relationships." In 1982 I made a vow to read God's word daily and apply it to life. Each day I write out my reflections. Some days I post those on my blog. It's a little personal but it's my hope it will stir you to go deeper still. Learn how I do my devotions. These are my thoughts and not necessarily those of the ministry I serve. By the way check out the computer study Bible Glo. I highly recommend it.
